I finished mixing the Fucking Teeth album just today (I’ll put up some of the finished tracks soon), and I’ll hopefully get the Disintegrates EP mixed this week. Plus I’ve got a bunch of projects confirmed between now and the end of the year including Brown, Sexy Robot, The Reptilians and Sully.

Also, next year I’ll be taking a year off before getting a real job (just finished my engineering degree) to study sound at Tafe, which means I’ll be doing a heap of recording and probably nothing else for the whole year.

I’ve just finished recording an album with Fucking Teeth...

I’ve just finished recording an album with Fucking Teeth which is sounding really awesome and will probably be out early next year when Pete gets back from over east. We recorded 10 songs in an afternoon, all live (including vocals) at Hen House rehearsal studios. The room we recorded them in was quite small, and we only had a few hours, so the tracks are a little rough but they’re fairly representative of the sound of the band (plus the new songs are all really great).

We tracked everything live, with vocals overdubbed. These recordings are by far the best I’ve done (a big part being due to recording in an incredible sounding room), and I’m quite proud of them. We’re going to do some tracking later in the year for an official release which will probably be mixed and mastered professionally. Here’s one of the three tracks we recorded;

Over the past 6 months or so I’ve been doing some recordings for an awesome band called Ducks on a String. We did the original live band tracks(guitar, bass and drums all recorded in one room) for 7 songs one day in October last year , didn’t get around to doing vocals until February and March (and recorded another song from scratch live) this year and have only just started to get around to getting some final mixes together. There’s 8 tracks all up so I’ll put a couple more up here once we’ve finished mixing (they’re all mostly done, I just need to go through with the band and make some tweaks), but here’s two finished tracks for now.

For three of the songs (including the two here), we recorded the piano, guitar and vocals all live in the one room and for another 2 tracks we did the piano and guitar together and overdubbed the vocals. I’m pretty happy with how these came out, especially considering that we only spent around 3-4 hours recording and had the final mixes done in less than a week.

These recordings have been my first real chance to get to mess around with my new preamps and it’s been quite astonishing the impact they’ve had on the sounds I can get. Here’s one of the tracks we recorded. Neutral Native- Safe Opinion by rhyscatlin

Sanssangria

I recorded 3 tracks for Sanssangria over a weekend at the end of May. This was the first chance I had to use my NT2000 and pair of NT5s and I’m really happy with how the tracks came out, especially given that everything was recorded in a shed. Since upgrading my mics I’m finally starting to get recordings I’m proud of and meet my own standards of sound quality. Problem is I haven’t had any bands to record in the past few months (2 bands I was going to record broke up before I got to, and a couple of projects I lined up fell through)- for the first time I am confident in my ability to get good sounding recordings but I can’t find anyone to record.

We’re a three piece with Daniel Lawson on guitar, Regan Bleechmore on drums and me on guitar. We’ve only been playing together for around 5 months (and in that time, we’ve only managed to get together to jam 4 times), but hopefully we’ll be able to find some time in the next couple of months to spend a day or two recording.

This was recorded entirely live (and I overdubbed a bass track) and captures the raw sound I want for this band’s recordings. For this track, I borrowed a pair of AKG C214s and an AKG C4000 and using a bunch of nice condenser mics for the first time (big step up from my Audio Technica 2020s/2021s and Rode NT1) made a huge difference in my sound.

Hmmm Dpt is Max Vickery, a freakishly talented 16 year old who knows more about experimental music than just about anyone I know. This was mostly done in one take (with the exception of some percussion and bass overdubs) with max making all these sounds with a tiny synth, a drum machine and a microphone running through a bunch of pedals, all split between two small practice amps. The synth and drum machine were DIed and the amps they were running into were close mic’ed and I threw a bunch of overhead condensors in to bring some warmth to the sound.

Little Ships are a two piece who describe their style as “Folk Gaze”. Sarah Tout sings and plays a nylon stringed acoustic guitar while Jack Midalia (who played in my old band and is an all round great guy) plays electric guitar. This was recorded back in October 2010 completely live (as in no overdubs) with Jack’s amp was miked in another room. Little Ships holds the record for ‘quietest band I’ve ever recorded’. This track has managed to get a heap of radioplay on RTR which is pretty sweet (http://rtrfm.com.au/search/?keywords=%22little+ships%22&x=14&y=3).

The Silent World are a band I’m good friends with, and a while back they got me to help them out with recording their debut EP. They play what is best described as guitar based Post-Rock. We recorded 5 tracks, two of which I recorded with them from scratch (this track and a new song they recorded as the bonus track on the album), the other three mostly being pieced together from sessions they recorded by themselves. Jon McKay from the band mixed all of the tracks on the EP (then mastered by Simon Struthers at Forensic Audio), so this is my mix of their song Oklahoma.

As this was done a while ago (recorded in the middle of 2010), neither the band or myself had any real experience with recording a full band and the gear we used was pretty basic so I don’t think the tracks sound as good as they should. But the EP managed to get played on RTR (and apparently even once or twice on triple J) a bunch of times giving them more exposure than they ever could have anticipated.
